FLORENCE + THE MACHINE

DANCE FEVER

Between 2021 and 2022, Florence Welch and her record label, Polydor Records, commissioned Andrea to create a series of lyric artworks to promote Florence + the Machine's fifth album Dance Fever. Inspired by the text and by the aesthetics of the album, Andrea's visuals of sacred hearts, books of emblems, alchemic illustrations and embroideries merge with Florence's imagery for Dance Fever.

Dance Fever is the fifth studio album of Florence + the Machine. Florence’s took inspiration for the lyrics from “the tragic heroines of Pre-Raphaelite art, the gothic fiction of Carmen Maria Machado and Julia Armfield, the visceral wave of folk horror film from The Wicker Man and The Witch to Midsommar to the folkloric elements of a moral panic from the Middle Ages". The title of the album was inspired by Florence’s fascination with choreomania, the dancing mania that swept Europe in the Middle Ages, where people danced to death.

In August 2022, Florence Welch commissioned a new artwork from Andrea. Drawing inspiration from one of Florence's drawings - the theme of the sacred heart both dear to them and inspired by the embroidery crafted in monasteries by nuns - Andrea creates a new image that embodies these themes and blends with the aesthetics of Dance Fever. The image will later be used as the official profile picture for Florence’s TikTok page.

During June 2022 Andrea created "The Daffodils", an artwork inspired by William Wordsworth’s poem of dancing flowers, by that sense of folk and gothic fairytale that pervades Dance Fever and by the lyric of Florence Welch’s haunting hymn Daffodil. In October 2022, the artwork becomes an exclusive and limited series of t-shirts for Florence + the Machine. Andrea, inspired by the original artwork, realised and curated the digital assets.

In December 2022 Florence + The Machine and her label Polydor Records commissioned a lyric artwork for Mermaids, the latest track from the Dance Fever album.

Andrea researched a series of images and references from the Middle Ages to current times inspired by Florence's brief of a double-tailed mermaid. From medieval sirens out of illuminated manuscripts, through the imagery of Shakespeare’s The Tempest, to the nymphs, lamias and naiades of John William Waterhouse and the mysterious character of Gustav Klimt's seductive creatures.

In May 2023 Andrea was commissioned to create a new artwork for ''Dog Days are Over'', 15 years after the first release of the album. The lyric artwork inspired and designed in the same style as the others created for Dance Fever draws inspiration from the early aesthetics of Lungs, the imagery of the constellation of the Dog and the avant-garde style of the theater group of the Cockettes.

The "Hibiscus Scrapbooks'' written and decorated between 1966 and 1968 by Hibiscus, one of the leaders and founders of the Cockettes, also played an important role in the inspiration for the artwork. It is a diary where the Victorian aesthetics of "cutouts" are mixed with glitter, notes, studies and visual references that would lay the foundations for Hibiscus and the art group's flamboyant performances.
