SYMPHONY OF LUNGS

FLORENCE + THE MACHINE LIVE AT THE 69TH BBC PROMS WITH JULES BUCKLEY AT THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL

In April 2024 Florence Welch’s team and creative director Molly Hawkins commissioned Andrea to create an artwork for the 69th BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall. The project entitled ‘Symphony of Lungs’ is a celebration of the 15th anniversary of Florence + the Machine's debut album Lungs with an entirely new arrangement by renowned and inventive composer Jules Buckley. The new musical arrangement features a classical choir, the London Contemporary Voices, an orchestra, the organist Anna Lapwood and an array of medieval English instruments.

Inspired by the aesthetics of the album Lungs - but also by the visual codes of previous projects like Dance Fever - Andrea created the key artwork for the project. The artwork carries several meanings, from the centrepiece inspired by the cover of Lungs, over the summer lilacs growing lushly symbolising new beginnings in the language of flowers, to the little birds evoking 'Bird Song’. As both Florence and Andrea are fond of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, Dante Gabriele Rossetti's painting ‘Veronica Veronese’ is an additional source of inspiration.

The Symphony of Lungs artwork, as well as becoming the central artwork for the project announcement, is also embroidered on tunics to adorn the London Contemporary Voices surrounding Florence on stage, as album covers for both Vinyls and CD, and as main imagery for various merchandising products sold on the opening night of 11 September at the Royal Albert Hall and on the Florence + the Machine website.
